Black British Ballet online!

There’s been some exciting new additions to our YouTube channel that you may have missed:

  • Our groundbreaking, Windrush-themed ballet, Island Movements
Island Movements is a 30-minute ballet that tells the story of Windrush and explores the impact of this generation’s experiences on their families, communities and society. Beginning with a young Caribbean soldier in WW2 Britain, this moving tale follows her and her family through their life in the UK up to the current day.

  • Into the Light: Pioneers of Black British Ballet 360° interactive video
Into the Light: The Pioneers of Black British Ballet exhibition aims to celebrate the lives of these trailblazers. The exhibition brings together archive photography, film, newspaper articles and posters alongside new video and audio interviews to trace the history of Black British ballet from the 1940s to the present.

  • Onisere and the Ballet Queen animated short
Onisere wants to be a ballet dancer but there’s just one problem: she’s Black and she’s never seen any other ballet dancers who look like her. Enter, the ballet queen, Simbira, who takes Onisere, and her annoying, football mad little brother Tayo, on a fantastical journey through the history of Black British ballet.

  • Interview clips of our dancers with archive footage of Dance Theatre of Harlem in London
Hear directly from Dance Theatre of Harlem legend Arthur Mitchell and our Black British ballet pioneers Carol Straker, Julie Felix, Adam James and more.

We’re also excited to share that our Into the Light exhibition will be touring 30 libraries this year across England and Wales. For the full schedule visit our Black British Ballet site.
